Patriots Grind Out A Win Vs Miami

The Patriots win wasn’t the prettiest win but it is a win that gives the Patriots the AFC East Title. The Patriots won their fourth AFC East Title in a row and now are guaranteed a playoff spot. The Patriots offense wasn’t very sharp in anyway in this game but the defense played a good game through out.

The Dolphins go three and out on their first series but the punter fumbles and aborts trying to punt it and got tackled by Matt Slater at Miami’s 12 yard line which is where the Patriots began their first series of the game. A holding penalty set New England back 10 yards and after an incompletion, Brady hit back to back passes to set New England up at the two yard line where RB Steven Ridley plowed into the endzone to put the Patriots up 7-0. On the next series the Patriots offense stalled out and had to settle for a field goal try but kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed his 49 yard try so the score remained 7-0 but after another 3 and out for the Dolphins offense Brady tried to force a pass to Aaron Hernandez and has it intercepted for only his fourth inception of the season which lead to a Dolphins field goal at the end of the first quarter that made it 7-3.  To start the second quarter Brady lead New England down the field where he beat the blitz with a screen pass to Welker who goes in for the score 7 yards out, and on the day Welker finished with 12 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Brady wasn’t sharp ending the game 24-40 for 238 yards and a touchdown pass and a interception. Ridley finished the game with 19 rushing attempts for 71 yards and a touchdown, Ridley’s 71 yard rushing day gives him over 1,000 yards rushing on the season. Hernandez caught 8 passes for 97 yards. Unfortunately Julian Edelman left the game in the fourth and was seen after the game walking in a walking boot and using crutches.

Trevor Scott got a strip sack in the game with Wilfork recovering the football and then giving the football to his wife as a present. The Patriots didn’t do much with the turnover but did turn it into 3 points with Gostkowski hitting a 43 yard field goal. On the next series Tannehill and the ground game helped the Dolphins get it up the field and Tannehill finished it out with a touchdown run to take it to the half 17-10. The third quarter went without a score but the Patriots scored to start the 4th with a 32 yard field goal to make it 20-10. Trevor Scott got in on another sack on the next Dolphins drive, but the Dolphins settled for a field goal from 33 yards out. 8 minutest left to go in the game and the Patriots began an impressive long drive to drain the clock out and end it with a 20yard field goal to put them up 23-10. That drive featured Ridley the most and he was effective enough that Brady only threw 3 passes and all three was completed so after the two minute warning that is when they kicked the field goal leaving only 1:15 seconds on the clock. That drive had 16 plays that took 7 minutes and 18 seconds. The Dolphins did add one more field goal that lead them to try an onside kick which Lloyd recovered and ended the game giving the Patriots the AFC East Title.
