Patriots Gab Edition: Matt Elam Potential Draft Prospect

Matt Elam is a strong safety who plays for the Florida Gators. He wears number 22 and is a Junior so there is a chance he stays another year at Florida but since he is ranked as the number one ss coming out of college this year there is a good chance he is going to the draft. He is the guy I most want New England to get to sure up a bad secondary. Adding Talib I think will help a lot and having McCourty permanently staying at free safety makes the secondary better. Getting a guy like Elam would make the secondary a lot better.

Elam is a Cortland Finnegan at the strong safety spot. I wanted the Patriots to get Finnegan I thought he could bring his very physical play to this secondary that isn’t physical by any means. Maybe Talib makes them more physical but other then that with McCourty they are not. Finnegan trash talks and hits hard and receivers hate playing against him and he has talent to back it up. Elam is a lot like that. He is a big hitter. He stands 5’10 202 pounds. He hits like a fast 300 pound guy. Very physical style of play and very emotional. I love watching this guy play by far my favorite Florida player. He trash talks a lot too. He loves getting inside of the opposing teams head. One of my favorite moments of Elam was after tackling hard an LSU player he gets up and looks at the LSU player and folds his hand gets his helemet and tells him to go to sleep. He would make the Patriots secondary a rough, tough, trash talking, bad men walking players. Physical to be at the line and cause all kinds of havoc for qbs, rbs, and wrs. The Patriots need a strong safety. They also need a corner but take the best available player that is there and this guy should be taken by New England he is far to good to pass on. The things he could do for the Patriots will be a lot and sure up the safety spot which has been a weakness for New England. Everything in the secondary has been but this would end that. He is a strong safety to the core of the meaning. The Patriots need this guy to have one of the best safety tandems in the NFL. This guy certainly knows the art of stripping balls and causing fumbles.

His career stats so far and I don’t think its even counting last Saturday and today’s game.

152 tackles. 19.5 tackles for loss.  4 sacks. 5ints. 17 passes defended. 3force fumbles.

Matt Elam style of play is exactly what the Patriots need at that position.  He is a must get by the Patriots.
