Plaxico Burress to Work Out For Patriots

Wide receiver Plaxico Burress will be working out for the New England Patriots Sunday as the free agent will travel from New Jersey to New England, according to ESPN.

For starters, you might be wondering why the Patriots would even have any interest in the 35-year-old? You might believe that the team already has enough depth at the position with the likes of Brandon Lloyd, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Deion Branch, Donte’ Stallworth, Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater.

Isn’t New England’s wide receiver corps a little crowded as is?

Perhaps New England is still looking for a tall, physical receiver that can have a major impact in the red-zone—something that they have been lacking for many years.

Plax stands in at 6’5″ and certainly brings the physicality that New England’s wide receiver corps is lacking—but some might argue that the 35-year-old’s skills are diminishing.

After spending two seasons away from the game of football, Burress returned to the New York Jets in 2011. To be fair, Burress was productive but his routes weren’t as crisps as you’d expect out of someone that’s as talented as him. Plax played in all 16 games as he recorded 45 receptions for 612 yards and a solid eight touchdowns.

It’s never easy to predict what Bill Belichick and the Patriots plan on doing—but by bringing in someone that is as talented as Burress could be yet another Albert Haynesworth, Corey Dillon or Randy Moss project.

If Burress impresses during his workout, perhaps New England will pull the trigger and add him to their roster—or they simply might put him in their back-burner and call him up in an emergency situation.
