Rookie Running Back Brandon Bolden Has Been Impressing Bill Belichick

When you’re an undrafted rookie free agent, there’s no better way to increase your chances of earning a roster spot than impressing your head coach—especially when your head coach happens to the general manger.

In Brandon Bolden’s case, he’s performed extremely well throughout training camp and his head coach, Bill Belichick, spoke to the media about his progress:

“Like all the rookies, he’s made plenty of mistakes. But he’s made progress, he’s worked at it. Like I said, he’s a smart kid, he’s picked things up fairly well.”

Granted, Belichick did say that he’s made plenty of mistakes, which is a negative, but you have to expect all head coaches to identify negatives as well as the positives.

With Joseph Addai no longer being a member of the New England Patriots, Bolden has definitely received a gift from the football gods as he’ll now have a solid shot at making New England’s 53-man roster.

As of right now, New England’s running back corps consists of Stevan Ridely, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead and Bolden. In 2011, the Patriots carried a total of four running backs, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Ridley, Vereen and Woodhead. With Green-Ellis now a Cincinnati Bengal, that certainly opens up a roster spot for Bolden.

With the Patriots historically utilizing a running-back-by-committee philosophy, Bolden could very well be apart of that group, with Ridley and Vereen being the workhorses of the committee and Woodhead being the third-down back.

Now that we’re four days into training camp, all Bolden can do is continue what he’s doing as he’s already caught the eye of Bill Belichick.
