New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Crimson Tide Players to Patriot Players? Hopefully so.

The most surprising thing to me is in a lot of mock drafts they have Dont’a Hightower as a late first round pick. I’m not exactly sure why they think that, but I hope he is because he would be a huge steal for New England.

Dont’a Hightower is a beast at the linebacker position. He would be ideal for Belichick coming from a Nick Saban defense. Hightower was the heart and soul of the National Champion Alabama’s defense.

He’s a do it all linebacker. He is probably, to me, the best run stopping linebacker in this year’s draft. He’s a sure tackler with great strength. He has great short area quickness and can stay on the field in passing situations. He can cover and break up passes nicely for a linebacker of his size. Anybody who tries to catch a short pass over the middle will be hit hard by Dont’a.

He has great football intelligence, just what Belichick wants. Hightower can be used in different ways as a run stopper and a pass rusher. The Patriots could use both and he has the skills to do both and do them well. Another thing about Hightower that Belichick would love is the fact you can put him almost anywhere on the field. He can pass rush from the defensive end and from the linebacking position.  He is a must get if he is there for the Patriots to draft.

Dequan Menzie is the other Alabama player I would love to see the Patriots grab in this year’s draft. The cornerback from Alabama is not as talked about as CB Dre Kirkpatrick and Safety Mark Barron. Believe me, he was just as much a part of making Alabama’s secondary this past season one of the best in college football.

He has what I like to call field speed, he looks faster on the field than running the 40 yard dash. I’d prefer speed field anyways. He can cover and pass breakup well. He is a good tackler and even good blitzer for a cornerback as well. He is another smart guy from Saban’s defense.

His college coach Saban said you could use him as a safety. He is another versatile player for the Patriots on defense.  In the 2011 season he had four tackles for losses and the big stat for me, 11 pass breakups and 12 passes defended. He plays tight coverage and he is a great cover corner. He could and will be a step up from our cornerbacks. Most draft projections for Menzie is anywhere from 2nd to 4th round. Patriots are known for grabbing a good talent in the middle of the draft and he could be another talent the Patriots can grab.
