Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker on Monday got the dreaded franchise tag from the team, meaning that he will be back on the roster in 2012 unless something unforseen happens.
While he still wants to get something long term done with the Pats, he Tweeted out that he is happy to be back with the team that made him a star.
“Glad that I will be a Patriot in 2012. and hopefully ’13,’14,’15,’16,’17,’18……….,” Welker wrote on Twitter.
Welker has been a beast since coming to the Pats from the Dolphins back as a free agent in 2007.
He has 554 receptions, which is just four shy of the franchise’s all-time record, for 6,105 yards and 31 touchdowns. Welker earned $2.5 million in base salary last season and would earn close to $9.5 million in base salary in 2012, though the Patriots are likely to replace the tender with a multi-year extension.
