5th Round Pick Cannon Going From Tackle to Guard a Big Deal

There’s been a lot of talk about the move from tackle to guard for Pats 5th round pick Marcus Cannon. The Boston Globe talked about it on Monday, and on Tuesday quoted Cannon who stated it would not be an issue and that he likes playing the guard spot.

“It was pretty fun actually. It was a new opportunity, something new I had to work with. My offensive line coach Eddie Williamson helped me out the most. Our defensive ends are pretty good; our defense is pretty good, you know, he was like, ‘they can’t beat you’ and he’d always slap me, he’d be like, ‘you go and block them, no one can stop you, you can block anybody.’ I finally got my feet down, started being able to block our guys and it was true, you know? It’s just crazy; God’s blessed me so much. It just seems like there’s no top to the end of my success. Keep making the roof higher and higher for me.”

Guard is a position of need for the Pats, and having Cannon fill the role of playing guard is a major reason they spent a fifth-round pick on him. Otherwise, they may not have taken him at all.
