• Does a nice job of breaking and closing on the ball
• Tough, physical and also a willing and able tackler
• Smart w/ good instincts, awareness and football IQ
• Is competitive and confident with a short memory
• A hard worker and leader respected by teammates
• Has a lot of experience against quality competition

Weaknesses:
• Is not overly quick or explosive and lacks a burst
• Struggles to run downfield versus speedy wideouts
• Lacks the ability to catch up and recover when beat
• Can be too aggressive at times and will get caught
• Has a thin lower body and is susceptible to injuries

Notes: First name is pronounced “rahs-eye” — Was a three-year starter and team captain for the Cavaliers — Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2008 and 2009 — Spent year after high school at Hargrave Military Academy to get grades in order — Thrived in classroom at UVa and graduated with a Sociology degree in 3½ years — Also excelled on special teams during college career — Dealt with a number of injuries (knee, hand, hamstring, back) dating back to prep days — Missed a lot of action as a senior while battling a broken left ankle as well as knee and hamstring ailments — Projected as a potential first round pick at one point but didn’t have a standout senior campaign — Best fit at the next level may come in a zone scheme — Actually similar in many ways to former college teammate  and  current Minnesota Viking Chris Cook.

Russ’ Take: Going for the playmaker is always the way to go.  Kiper had the UVA product ranked 20th on his Big Board.  Dowling has the size-speed combo teams covet.  Solid choice by the Pats.
