Meriweather hit with $50,000 fine for hit on Heap from Sunday

The NFL has done as promised, handing down a hefty fine for what they consider dangerous hits around the league from this past Sunday.

The Pats Brandon Meriweather was right in the middle of it, as he was hit with a $50,000 fine for his launching hit on Ravens TE Todd Heap in the teams overtime win over the Ravens Sunday.

Ray Anderson, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, stated on Monday that suspensions could start immediately for any future hits from players around the league like those that were laid down Sunday.

He said he hopes that the fines will send a message to players across the league.

“We hope we are sending a message, emphatically, that going forward, hits to the head that are illegal … will be dealt with at a higher level,” Anderson said. “Players and coaches need to know that accountability is elevated, and we’re not going back. …

“What we’re trying to say, very clearly, going forward is that everyone should be on notice. The line should be clear. If you go over that line, you should anticipate that elevated discipline, up to and including suspensions, and in flagrant and egregious cases, multiple-game suspensions will be on the table.”

Steelers LB James Harrison ($75,000) and Falcons CB Dunta Robinson ($50,000) also were hit with big fines for hits on Sunday in their teams games.
