Patriots 2010 captains: Brady, Faulk, Mayo and Wilfork

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick announced today that quarterback Tom Brady, running back Kevin Faulk, middle linebacker Jerod Mayo and defensive lineman Vince Wilfork are the team’s 2010 captains.

“I think it’s a great selection by the team,” Belichick said at his morning press conference. “These four guys have all been in that role before and have done all the things that you would want your captains to do. I think we have a lot of other good leadership on the team … but I think those four they do a great job. They were selected by the team.”

None of the players are primary contributors on special teams, which traditionally has one representative as a captain. Wide teceiver Sam Aiken, whose primary contributions came on special teams, was a captain last year, but was released by the team during final cuts.

When asked about the lack of a special teams captain, Belichick said the “four team captains represent everybody.”

One small note, wide receiver Randy Moss had been a captain each of the last two years but is not a captain this season. The Patriots open up the 2010 regular season at home against the Cincinnati Bengals.
