Logan Mankins saga continues for Patriots

Frank Bauer, (no relation to fictional character Jack Bauer), the agent for New England Patriots left guard Logan Mankins said Friday that the team has “totally lost [Mankins] mentally,” and added the Patriots “don’t care. … I would expect them to do everything nasty that they can.”

During an interview with the Boston Globe, Bauer continued to light into the Patriots organization. The agent’s verbal tirade is the latest entry in fierce contract battle between restricted free agent Mankins and the Patriots front office.

“For this young man to work like he has and play for the club for five years, and be promised he’d be taken care of, and to throw the offer they did across the table?” Bauer asked. “It was never, ever a five-year deal. They wanted six years, they wanted seven. They have to do what they have to do, and we’ll do what we have to do.”

Someone has to explain to me at least the logic behind this latest tirade from the Mankins camp. The longer the holdout goes, the less likely it is that New Englanders will ever see Logan Mankins in a Patriots uniform again. The Patriots will most likely shop Mankins around to the rest of the league, because at this point a deal seems farther away than it has been at any point in the past.

Mankins must be on an NFL roster for at least six games to accrue a season toward free agency, and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. If Mankins is placed on the roster exempt list (due to failure to report) by the Patriots, he’ll need to sign before the club’s eighth game (Week 9) in order to play in the final six games. Eventually there will be a resolution to this quagmire, Mankins will either sign, or be traded; the latter of which appears to be the most likely at this current stage in the Mankins saga.
