Wes Welker removed from active/PUP list, cleared to practice

New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio said earlier this morning that wide receiver Wes Welker has been removed from the active/physically unable to perform list and will practice with the team Sunday.

Welker has not been able to participate in any of the teams five practices so far, but has been seen each day of training camp on the sidelines working on strength and conditioning, running routes, and catching passes. Welker, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn left ACL and MCL, has made incredible progress, and according to Caserio was removed from the active/physically unable to perform list after passing his physical. This move by the Patriots strengthens the possibility that Welker will be on the field for the season opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 12th.

“He works hard, he’s committed to football. … Wes is a unique guy, there is no question about it,” Caserio said. “It’s a tribute to him and his work ethic and competitiveness and toughness to get back on the field.”

Welker will be in full pads for the first time since the injury when the Patriots take the practice field for a pair of sessions today scheduled, for 9:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.
