Pat’s Derrick Burgess considering retirement?

According to ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli, a source has told ESPN.com that nine year veteran Derrick Burgess, who did not report for training camp Thursday, is contemplating retiring.

Burgess, 31 signed a one-year deal with the Patriots this past offseason after becoming an unrestricted free agent. Burgess recorded 35 tackles and five sacks for the Patriots last season, after the Patriots traded a pair of draft picks (2010 third and fourth round selections) to acquire Burgess from the Oakland Raiders in the pre-season.

With the release of Shawn Crable, and possible retirement of Burgess, the Patriots could be in the market for an outside linebacker all of a sudden. If Burgess were to retire, the Patriots would be forced to shuffle their linebacking corps around considerably. Tully Banta-Cain and Rob Ninkovich worked with the first team at outside linebacker in the Patriots first practice of training camp. Burgess is expected to compete for a starting position, and while a major disappointment in his first season as a Patriot, Burgess is expected to contribute as a pass rushing threat at outside linebacker this season. In the event that Burgess retires, that leaves Banta-Cain, Ninkovich, Pierre Woods, Tyrone McKenzie and rookie Jermaine Cunningham as possible replacements at outside linebacker.

Pasquarelli’s sources have indicated as recently as Wednesday that, Burgess told associates that he was leaning toward retirement. Those same sources indicated, however, that Burgess could still change his mind about his immediate future.

Burgess is a nine year veteran who has played in 101 games, starting 73 of them. For his career, Burgess has racked up 262 tackles, 52 sacks, seven pass deflections, and forced six fumbles. Burgess led the NFL with 16 sacks in 2005, and followed that up with 11 sacks in ’06. He has recorded only 16½ sacks, however, in his last three seasons and 8½ the past two years.

  2. […] With the depth at outside linebacker and lack of a pass rushing defensive end a major concern the Patriots have been rotating a group of outside linebackers at practice, which includes Tully Banta-Cain, Pierre Woods, Jermaine Cunningham and Rob Ninkovich. The Patriots apparently have shown interest in adding Ogunleye to that mix. Their interest can certainly be attributed to the fact that defensive end Derrick Burgess unexpectedly did not show up for camp, and is contemplating retirement. […]
