Spikes, Patriots close to finalizing contract

Christopher Price of WEEI.com spoke with Terry Watson, the agent for Patriots second-round selection Brandon Spikes, earlier today. Spikes is the only Patriots draft pick other than first-round pick Devin McCourty who still remains unsigned. Watson had this to say regarding the Spikes negotiations, “I have put together a contract offer to them that meets past precedent and custom,” said Watson. “I am hopeful they accept it.”

Spikes, a linebacker out of Florida, who was taken 62nd overall, should expect a contract just shy of what 61st overall selection, UMass offensive tackle Vladimir Ducasse signed with the Jets earlier this month, a four-year deal worth $3.225 million with $1.435 million in guaranteed money.

With Patriots rookies reporting to training camp Sunday, July 25th, and veterans showing up Thursday, July 29th, getting both Spikes and McCourty, who are expected to make an impact for the Patriots on the defensive side of the ball this season, one the practice field is a major priority for the New England front office. With two of the Patriots three second-round picks signed, a deal between Spikes and the Patriots appears imminent, if history is any indication.
