Patriots Cut QB Kevin O’Connell

Apparently the Patriots like what they are seeing out of newly acquired Andrew Walters because sources report they have now released quarterback Kevin O’Connell. The Patriots third round choice out of San Diego State University in 2008, O’Connell never got a real chance to show his stuff in the preseason as Tom Brady and Andrew Walters took most of the snaps against Philadelphia and Cincinnati. Hopefully this means that Tom Brady’s “sore shoulder” is okay and that he should see the field in New England’s final preseason game at home against the Giants.

O’Connell’s release also seemingly points to the fact that the Patriots are content with having Andrew Walters as the second string quarterback. Coming out of the draft in 2008, O’Connell was thought to have a lot of potential from his size (6’5”, 230 lb.) and his strong arm. O’Connell was beat out by Matt Cassel in 2008 for the backup job and rode the bench for most of the season and Cassel took the reins of the Patriots offense.

It would not be surprising to see O’Connell get picked up by either the Broncos or the Chiefs as Matt Cassel and Matt Guttierez (both previous Patriots backup quarterbacks) have landed in Kansas City. Josh McDaniels has made no secret of the fact that he likes dealing with Belichick for Patriots.
