What is the latest with Jason Taylor and where he’s going in 2009? Well, a report from Friday’s Providence Journal states that Taylor actually may already have a handshake agreement in place with the Patriots. There’s been rumors for awhile that Taylor would end up with the Pats, a team that could use another playmaker on defense.
Here’s part of the report from the Journal:
There are some who believe the Pats and Jason Taylor already have a handshake agreement in place. With the respect it appears Belichick has for Taylor, it’s not too far-fetched to think that he’ll be given a playbook, told to study up, and stay in shape until training camp begins at the end of July. That would give Taylor maximum time with his family.
Taylor probably could come in right away and play for Belichick and do it at a high level. There was some chatter earlier this offseason about Taylor going back to Miami, but that talk quickly died down, and with Cameron Wake in Miami, it looks like that door is completely closed.
That leaves the Pats as maybe the only real serious suitor for Taylor. He was a third-round pick of the Dolphins back in 1997, and played there until after the 07 season, when he was traded to the Redskins. He lasted there one year, making 13 starts with 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks before getting released this offseason.
