New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Poor Baby

Let the whining begin. Adalius Thomas, linebacker for the Patriots, is blasting the league and owners for considering the addition of more regular-season games, especially if it doesn’t come with commensurate pay for the players. I guess the $35 million over 5 years isn’t enough for him.

Thomas’ real problem with all of this? He appears to think that the owners are doing this as a way to just make money for themselves and not for sharing it with the players. He contends that the players are compensated differently for preseason and regular season games and he seems to think that the players will be short-changed. During the regular season the players are paid a weekly pay check, while during the preseason the players are paid a per-diem rate.

This money is a portion of the total gross revenue that the league receives and it represents the player’s share. I’ll admit, without digging a lot deeper and crunching a lot of numbers, I don’t completely understand how the revenue sharing all works out. But Thomas’ attitude bothers me.

In the real world where we all live, people are being asked to do a lot more for little or no extra compensation. Why should pro-football players be any different? Some might raise the issue of players getting hurt in games. Don’t players get hurt in pre-season games also? I suspect that the league won’t be able to extend the season without discussions with the players union.

And instead of a player running off at the mouth, it might be more beneficial for Thomas to work within the process; for the benefit of the game.
