New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Pats Ink Free Agent CB Shawn Springs

The Patriots have added a big piece to their secondary today, as reports say they have come to terms with former Seahawk and Redskins CB Shawn Springs. NFL.com says that the money to sign Springs will come from the cap relief the team recently got from the trade of QB Matt Cassel.

It looked like Springs was going to land in Philadelphia, but they wanted to shift him to play safety for the departed Brian Dawkins. Springs was the third overall pick of the 1997 draft by Seattle, and played there for seven years until he signed with the Skins.

He’s a one-time Pro Bowl selection, but has been slowed in recent years by injuries, but should still be able to contribute as a nickel corner or dime back. In 12 seasons, he has started 140 of 157 games, collecting 675 tackles and 32 interceptions.
