Pats and Jets Ready to Battle for First in the East

There are always high emotions when the Pats and Jets matchup, but this weeks Thursday night game between the two has even more at stake as the two teams come in battling for first place in the AFC East.  The two teams are both 6-3, and are both coming off big wins this past Sunday.  The Jets pounded the Rams 47-3, this after leading 40-0 at the half.  The Pats were 20-10 winners at home vs the Bills, and in the game found their runnig game with BenJarvis Green-Ellis leading the way.

Now the two teams do battle for sole possession of the division.  The early meeting saw the Pats defense do a pretty good number on Brett Favre, holding the Jets offense in check for most of the afternoon in a 19-10 loss.  The Pats didn’t dominate that much on offense, as they only outgained the Jets by four yards, but a pick and a missed field goal really did in the Jets.

The Pats have owned the series, winning 13 of the last 16 games between the two.  If the Jets are going to win, they need to run the ball with Thomas Jones, and Favre has to make sure to take care of the ball, and not give the Pats a short field to work with.  He has played a bit better, and the team has been able to score a lot of points a few times this year, putting up an average of 32.1 points over the last seven games.
The Jets defense also has played well in 08, and will look to keep Matt Cassel and the running game of the Pats in check.  They did a pretty good job the last time around, and will look to keep them at bay again.  The one thing they can’t overlook is the running game, which if it gets going, can get going and then Cassel can use the play action to hold and freeze the Jets defense.

These two teams don’t like each other, almost as much as the two coaches don’t.  Look for an intense, physical game that will come down to the fourth quarter.  As much as the Pats are a team that can and have played well the past few weeks, the Jets seem to be playing a bit better right now, and with that, they will score a huge road win to go to 7-3 and first place in the AFC East.

Can the Jets outFox(borough) the Pats? We shall find out in another five or six hours. Hopefully, it will be an interesting game, with the Jets ultimately prevailing and claiming first place in the AFC East all to themselves.
