Jekyll And Hyde Patriots Destroy Broncos 41-7
The New England Patriots may or may not make the NFL post season this year, but they are certain to keep you on the edge of your seat. One week after looking like zombies while losing to the San Diego Chargers 30-10, they looked like the reincarnation of the 2007 Pats. Matt Cassel did his best Tom Brady imitation, as he completed 18/24 for 185 yards 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. New England even displayed a running game as Sammy Morris ran for 138 yards and a touchdown as the Patriots blew out the visiting Denver Broncos Monday night 41-7.
New England dominated this contest from the opening snap as they put 34 points on the board before the Broncos scored their lone touchdown. The Patriots took the lead in in the first quarter, as Stephen Gostkowski kicked two field goals in the period. The first one was from 31 yards out, with 5:08 remaining in the quarter. He kicked a 40 yard field goal with 2:06 in the first quarter putting his team ahead 6-0.
Sammy Morris sprinted four yards and crossed the goal line with 7:34 in the second, after the point after the Pats led 13-0. Cassel would end the half on a good note for New England as he connected with Randy Moss on a 13 yard pass for a touchdown with just 44 seconds left in the half. Gostkowski’s extra point made it New England 20 Denver 0 as the teams went to their respective locker rooms.
Cassel was just getting started, as he threw a 27 yard pass to Moss with 7:32 in the third quarter, Gostkowski once again put the ball through the uprights for an impressive 27-0 advantage. Cassel decided to share the love with Wes Welker hitting him with a 6 yard pass with 2:21 in the third. With another successful kick it was a 34-0 contest at the end of three quarters.
Denver finally got on the scoreboard with 13:21 in the fourth as Broncos QB Jay Cutler threw a 10 yard pass to Daniel Graham for a touchdown. Matt Prater put the ball through the goal posts, however Denver trailed 34-7. Patriots got that touchdown back with 3:09 left in the game as Benjarvus Green-Ellis sprinted for one yard and another touchdown. Gostkowski once again kicked the point after and the final score was Patriots 41 Denver 7.
Cutler did not have a good night behind center, as the Denver quarterback was 17/26 for 168 yards 1 touchdown but 2 interceptions. New England out rushed Denver 257 yards to 106 for the game.
So who are the real New England Patriots? The team that looked like scrubs against the Dolphins and the Chargers? Or is it the team that put on the aerial display Monday night. Patriots fans will hope that Monday night was Matt Cassel’s coming out party, but we will see if the celebration carries over to next week. The Patriots who are now 4-2 for the season will host the St. Louis Cardinals next Sunday. Denver now 4-3 have their Bye week next weekend.
