Matt and I started talking about what Tom Brady had accomplished during the first five weeks of the 2007 NFL campaign. I brought up two NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks, San Francisco 49ers QB Joe Montana, and Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino. I said to Matt that I had up until this season compared Brady and Indianapolis Colts QB to Montana and Marino. My thoughts had always been that although Brady had a more successful career than Manning wins wise with three Super Bowl Rings, I had always thought Manning was more athletically gifted than Brady. As Marino was more athletically gifted than Montana even though Montana had the rings. I said that unlike Marino, Manning had gotten the Super Bowl monkey off his back last season, but Brady this season seemed to have reached a new level. I theorized that if Brady could continue to prove that he was Manning’s equal or superior as a quarterback with the array of weapons he now had at his disposal “The sky’s the limit, it will be scary!”
Scary Time Is Officially Here!
The New England Patriots are now 7-0 after defeating the Miami Dolphins who are still looking for their first win of the year 49-28, in a game that was far more one sided than the final score indicates. This game was in extended garbage time by halftime as New England led 42-7 in the half. Here is another indication of just how much the New England offense revolves around Number 12; Brady was allowed to rest in the second half with the Patriots with such a huge lead. Patriots coach Bill Belichick, put in his backup quarterbacks Matt Gutierrez and then Matt Cassel into the game. After a scoreless third quarter Miami scored 21 unanswered points the last seven stemming from a Cassel interception. Belichick had seen enough and told Brady to get back in the game. Brady did and proceded to drive down the field for his sixth touchdown of the game a career high for Brady. Brady now has 27 touchdowns through the first seven games on pace for 61 for the season! The current NFL record is 49 for a season that was set in 2004 by you guessed it Peyton Manning.
Brady was an electric 21/25 for 354 yards, and six touchdowns and again no interceptions. Miami emergency starting quarterback went 24/37 with no touchdowns and one interceptions. Again the Patriots receivers shared the wealth as Randy Moss, and Wes Welker each had 2 touchdowns, and Donte Stallworth and Kyle Brady each had one. New England is 7-0 for the first time since entering the old A.F.L. in 1960.
