Looking for RB Help; Pats Call on Barlow
Posted by Matt Loede on October 18th, 2007 filed in NewsWith Laurence Maroney still hurt and now Sammy Morris on the injury report, the Pats are looking for help at running back, and took a look Monday at former 49′ers and Jets back Kevan Barlow. The former Pitt back was with the Steelers in training camp, but didn’t do enough to earn a roster spot and was let go as part of the teams final cuts. Morris did not practice on Wednesday, while Maroney did just limited drills with his lingering groin injury.
The 28-year-old Barlow ran for just 370 yards on 131 carries (2.8 yards per carry average) last season with the Jets. He was let go by them in February, then signed with the Steelers in May. He ran the ball quite a bit in training camp, but did not show enough to pass rookie fullback Carey Davis and veteran Dan Krieder to try and become a 3rd or 4th running back.

It would appear that the Patriots need to activate either RB Corey Dillon or RB Kevin Barlow to replace RB Sammy Morris in filling his primary roles of between the tackles, short yardage and red zone proficiency for the team. Dillon comes with baggage but knows the system while Barlow would need some time to get up to speed. For the Patriots to go with only 2 running backs & 2 fullbacks is dicey.
